Beginner Blacksmithing Course - February 2025
Hosted Monthly by Blue Leaf Forge and Saltfork Craftsmen Artist Blacksmith Association at Chestnut Forge
John Brown of Blue Leaf Forge and Mills of Chestnut Forge are hosting beginner blacksmithing classes on a Saturday of each month at Chestnut Forge. John is a registered ABANA educator and member of Saltfork Craftsmen. Each class is priced based on the project of the month. Lunch is not provided.
Classes begin at 9:30a and run until 12:00p, break for lunch, resume at 1:30 and run until 5:30p. If the project is finished before the end of the class, students and other SCABA members are encouraged to stay and help others, socialize, or forge as they like.
Classes require a current paid Saltfork Craftsmen membership available at www.saltforkcraftsmen.org and payment for the individual class in advance. Each student will be required to bring personal protective equipment including cotton or denim clothing, close-toed shoes, safety glasses, and hearing protection.

FEBRUARY’S CLASS WILL BE HELD FEBRUARY 15, 2025
February’s beginners’ class will see students creating Valentine’s Day pieces. This will include a one-piece rose and a heart shaped pendant. These pieces will be used to teach students some of the basics that are used by all blacksmiths. The pieces will be completed as time allows and each student is guaranteed at least one piece to take home.
Some of the skills that will be practiced in the class are:
Basic forge safety
Basic hammer control and striking
Tapering using the S-O-R technique
Basic leaf work
Scrolling
